Two natures

*Title: The Word Didn’t Pitch a Tent. He Built a Fence. And Men Died for It.* I study Peshitta. Not to get engulfed in Eastern Christian theology, but because the text won’t let me go. One word keeps pulling me back: ܐܓܢ. John 1:14 Peshitta: *ܘܡܠܬܐ ܗܘܐ ܒܣܪܐ ܘܐܓܢ ܒܢ* *“And the Word became flesh and fenced/gardened among us.”* Not “dwelt.” Not “tabernacled.” ܐܓܢ. ### *1. ܐܓܢ means fence. Not shade.* Greek says ἐσκήνωσεν — “pitched a tent.” Temporary. Military. Like camping. Aramaic says ܐܓܢ — from גנן. To wall in. To protect by surrounding. To garden. Every time ܐܓܢ shows up in Peshitta OT, it’s YHWH saying: _“I Myself will be your wall.”_ *Isa 37:35:* *ܐܓܢ ܥܠ ܡܕܝܢܬܐ ܗܕܐ* — “I will fence over this city” *Zech 9:15:* *ܢܓܢ ܥܠܝܗܘܢ* — “He will fence over them” *Isa 31:5:* *ܢܓܢ ܡܪܝܐ ܥܠ ܐܘܪܫܠܡ* — “YHWH will fence Jerusalem” John takes that covenant word and applies it to flesh. The Word didn’t shade us. He fenced Himself in. ### *2. Fenced in what? Flesh and bone.* Job 10:11 tells you the blueprint: *Peshitta:* ܡܫܟܐ ܘܒܣܪܐ ܐܠܒܫܬܢܝ ܘܡܢ ܓܪ̈ܡܐ ܘܡܢ ܓܝܕܐ ܣܟܟܬܢܝ *“Skin and flesh You clothed me, with bones and sinews You wove/fenced me”* Bones are the fence. Sinews are the cords. Skin is the outer wall. God wove Job a body-sukkah to house his soul. John 1:14: The Word did to Himself what YHWH did to Job. He took bones, sinews, flesh, skin — and ܐܓܢ. He fenced Himself in. This is why ܒܢ can only mean “among us.” Psalm 68:18 prophesied it: לִשְׁכֹּן יָהּ אֱלֹהִים בָּאָדָם — “that YAH God might dwell among men.” You can’t dwell _among_ men without a man’s body. Exodus 25:8 proves it: “Let them make Me a sanctuary that I may dwell _in their midst_ בְּתוֹכָם.” They built Him a body of gold and goatskin. John 1:14: He built Himself a body of flesh and bone. The Word didn’t hover _over_ us. Luke 9:34 cloud did that — ܡܛܠܠܐ “shaded over them.” The Word ܐܓܢ _among_ us. Fenced in. Visible. Touchable. 1 John 1:1 “which we have handled.” ### *3. Why this matters: ܬܪܝܢ ܩܢܘܡܐ — Two Natures* ܩܢܘܡܐ = nature, substance, what makes something what it is. Peshitta keeps what Greek flattened. *Heb 2:14:* “Because the children shared in flesh and blood, He also likewise shared in them” He took ܩܢܘܡܐ ܕܒܣܪܐ — the nature of flesh. Real. Breakable. *Col 2:9:* “In Him dwells all the fullness of Godhead bodily” He kept ܩܢܘܡܐ ܕܐܠܗܘܬܐ — the nature of Godhead. Unbroken. You can’t ܐܓܢ unless you have two things: 1. The One doing the fencing — Divine nature 2. The fence itself — Human nature If there’s only one nature, what fences what? Greek μία φύσις “one nature” erases ܐܓܢ. Turns incarnation into vague indwelling. Peshitta says: ܗܘܐ ܒܣܪܐ — took fleshy nature. ܘܐܓܢ — divine nature doing the fencing. ܒܢ — among us. Two natures. One ܦܪܨܘܦܐ — one Person, one Face. The flesh doesn’t swallow the Word. The Word doesn’t phantom the flesh. ### *4. Men died for this word* Nestorius defended ܬܪܝܢ ܩܢܘܡܐ at Ephesus in 431: “I distinguish the natures, but I unite the worship.” Condemned. Exiled. Died in the Egyptian desert. The Church of the East refused to drop it. Called “Nestorian” as a slur. They kept the Peshitta. They kept ܬܪܝܢ ܩܢܘܡܐ. And they bled for it. Under Sassanid Persia — martyred. Under Tamerlane — massacred. 1915 — Assyrian genocide. 300,000 slaughtered. 1933 — Simele massacre. 3,000 in a day. Today — Iraq, Syria. Churches burned. Bishops beheaded. Why? Because they confessed: *ܡܫܝܚܐ ܐܝܬܘܗܝ ܐܠܗܐ ܘܒܪܢܫܐ ܒܬܪܝܢ ܩܢܘܡܐ* “Messiah is God and Man in two natures.” In 1994 the Church of the East signed a “Common Christological Declaration” with Rome. To unite, they had to soften ܬܪܝܢ ܩܢܘܡܐ language. Heartbreaking. Their ancestors died refusing to soften it. ### *5. Why ܐܓܢ proves they were right* If the Word wasn’t really fenced in real flesh, real blood wasn’t shed. If real blood wasn’t shed, their blood cries in vain. But Hebrews 12:24 says the blood of Jesus “speaks better than Abel.” Because it was real. Bone-fenced. Sinew-walled. Skin-clothed. Pierced. Genesis 4:10: “The voice of your brother’s blood cries to Me from the ground.” Their ܩܢܘܡܐ confessed His ܬܪܝܢ ܩܢܘ̈ܡܐ. The ground remembers. Revelation 6:10: “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood?” He will. Because He really ܐܓܢ. ### *The Word didn’t pitch a tent. He built a fence.* Luke 9:34 — Cloud מטללא. Temporary shade. They leave it. John 1:14 — Word ܐܓܢ. Permanent fence. He stays. Luke 1:78 — The Sunrise ܕܢܚܐ from on high visits. That’s Zechariah 3:8 My servant the Branch צֶמַח. Malachi 4:2 — Sun of Righteousness rises. The Branch rises like the Sun. The Sun brings joy — שָׂמַח. Same sibilants. Same breath. The Garden of Eden גן עדן was a place of joy. The Word entered the garden of flesh to bring joy back. But He could only enter by being fenced in. Psalm 68:18: YAH will dwell בָּאָדָם — among men. John 1:14: He did. ܘܐܓܢ ܒܢ. I didn’t want theology. I wanted Peshitta. But ܐܓܢ _is_ theology. And men died for it. The Word became flesh. The Word fenced Himself in flesh and bone. Among us. For us. That’s why the martyrs’ blood still speaks. Because His did first.
