### *The Covered One: Why Isa 7:14 Means Virgin* *By [Yochanan]* *“Therefore YHWH Himself will give you a sign: Behold, ha-almah shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”* *Isaiah 7:14* Most English Bibles say “the Lord” there. But the text reads YHWH. Spelled Yod-Heh-Waw-Heh. Pronounced Yehowah by many. The Masoretes added the vowels for Adonay to remind readers to say “Lord” out loud, so you’ll see “Adonay” in most Hebrew printings. But Isaiah didn’t write Adonay. He wrote YHWH. The Peshitta confirms it. E.W. Bullinger flags it in _The Companion Bible_ Appendix 32. *YHWH gives the sign. Not Adonay. The covenant God of Israel is speaking.* --- #### *1. Almah: The Covered One* Hebrew almah comes from the root ayin-lamed-mem. That root means “to conceal, to hide, to cover.” *Same root:* - *ne’lam*: hidden, secret. Lev 5:2 - *olam*: “forever” — time concealed from sight - *elem*: young man in his prime, strength not yet revealed. 1 Sam 17:56 *An almah is a “covered one.”* In ancient Judah that meant three things: 1. *Secluded:* She lived in her father’s house, not public property. 2. *Veiled:* Like Rebekah in Gen 24:65 — “she took her veil and covered herself.” 3. *Unopened:* Her nakedness had not been uncovered. *Leviticus 18 repeats it 20 times:* “You shall not uncover the nakedness of...” galah erwah. To uncover nakedness = sexual union. To be covered = virgin. *So if she’s almah, she’s covered. If she’s covered, she’s not uncovered. If not uncovered, she’s a virgin.* The word itself carries it. You don’t need betuláh to get there. --- #### *2. The Ha Changes Everything: Ha-Almah* Isaiah didn’t say “an almah.” He said *ha-almah* — “THE almah.” The definite article ha points. It’s specific. Ahaz knew who Isaiah meant in 735 BC. Maybe the prophetess in Isa 8:3. Maybe a daughter in the royal court. The sign had to be visible to Ahaz then: “Before the boy knows to refuse evil and choose good, the land of the two kings you dread will be deserted.” Isa 7:16 *But prophecy encloses more than one fulfillment.* YHWH gives a sign for Ahaz, and the same words hold a greater Sign. The ha marks out “the covered one” God has chosen. --- #### *3. How Ancient Translators Heard It* *LXX ∼250 BC:* idou he parthenos en gastri hexei. “Behold, THE virgin shall conceive.” Seventy Jewish scholars in Alexandria chose *parthenos* — virgin. Not neanis “young woman.” They heard almah and rendered “virgin.” *Peshitta 2nd century AD:* ha bethulta. “Behold, THE virgin.” Aramaic speakers heard “covered one” and wrote “virgin.” Bullinger notes the Peshitta supports YHWH in 7:14 and renders virgin here. The two agree. *Matthew 1:23* quotes the LXX exactly. For the New Testament writers, parthenos was settled. YHWH had spoken it. --- #### *4. Why Not Use Betulah?* *Betulah = virgin, sexual status.* It’s used 50 times. If Isaiah wanted to remove all doubt, why not use it? Because almah says more. *Genesis 24 proves it:* *Gen 24:16* — Rebekah is “a betulah, and no man had known her.” Explicit. *Gen 24:43* — The servant calls her “ha-almah.” Same woman. *Betulah* = virgin. *Almah* = young, covered, marriageable, living under her father, presumed virgin, active, vigorous. Like the masculine elem — young men running in and out of the house. Strong. Not a child. *Isaiah picked the word that holds both the immediate and the ultimate.* A young covered woman in Ahaz’s day. THE Virgin YHWH chose for the ultimate Sign. --- #### *5. Covered Now, Revealed Later* *The root ayin-lamed-mem governs the whole thing.* Covered, hidden, concealed. *Isa 7:14:* The almah is covered. The sign is concealed. *Luke 1:27:* The virgin is named. Mary. The cover comes off, but only by the Holy Spirit, not by man. *YHWH Himself gives the sign.* Not Adonay. The covenant Name. The God who hides and reveals. Who covered Adam and Eve in Gen 3:21, who covered Jerusalem’s shame in Ezek 16:8, who covered the almah until the fullness of time. *The ha before almah is like a fence.* It marks her out. Not any young woman. THE one. Selected. Enclosed by YHWH. --- *So yes, almah means virgin.* Not because Christians forced it later, but because Hebrew itself, the LXX translators, the Peshitta, and the root all say it. Covered = not uncovered. *Put YHWH back where Isaiah wrote it. Keep the ha on almah. The Sign still stands.* ---
