Sick or polished?

### *Caught and Refined, Part 2: The Night My Hands Wouldn’t Stop* *Psalm 77:10* _Va’omar chaloti hi shenot yemin elyon_ “And I said, ‘This is my infirmity: the years of the right hand of the Most High.’” *That’s what the translations say. I don’t buy it.* Asaph is sleepless. Verse 2: _“My hand is stretched out in the night and does not grow numb.”_ He’s waving, restless, grinding. And then he says _chaloti_. *חלה _chalah*_ = to be weak, sick. *חלל _chalal*_ = to pierce, bore, wound. To play the flute _chalil_ because you bore holes. To begin, because you pierce into something new. *The root idea isn’t “infirmity.” It’s friction.* Tumbling stones. Grinding. Sanding. Boring holes until music comes out. *So read it again:* _“And I said, ‘This is my tumbling. This is the work of the right hand of the Most High.’”_ Asaph wasn’t dying. He was being polished. *Here’s the part translations won’t tell you:* Polishing feels like sickness while it’s happening. Stones in a tumbler don’t feel beautiful. They feel knocked around. Your edges are getting hit. You’re losing pieces of yourself. Of course you feel weak. Of course your hands won’t stop in the night. You’re not broken. You’re in process. *The right hand of God isn’t just strong. It’s a lapidary’s hand.* It holds the rough stone still long enough to make it shine. It bores the holes until there’s a song. It doesn’t stop the tumbler early because you’re uncomfortable. So if you’re up at 2 AM, hands restless, feeling ground down by life — maybe this isn’t infirmity. Maybe it’s _chaloti_. Your tumbling. *Weakness is the side effect. Beauty is the point.* The stone doesn’t know it’s becoming a sapphire while it’s in the grit. Neither did Asaph. But he figured it out mid-psalm. _“This is the years of His right hand.”_ He’s not rejecting you.
