### The Two Clocks of Israel: Why the Moon Does Not Reset the Sabbath A lot of teaching going around about a "celestial calendar" says if we don't use the moon to find Sabbath, we have the wrong day. I am not a calendar expert, but I know the basics of how the Bible keeps time. Israel had two clocks running at the same time. They do not reset each other. *Clock 1: The Week - _shavuah_ (שָׁבוּעַ) and _shabbat_ (שַׁבָּת)* The first clock is seven days. It comes from _sheva_ (שֶׁבַע) — seven. _shesh yamim ta'avod_ (שֵׁשֶׁת יָמִים תַּעֲבֹד) — "six days you shall labor" _wa-yom ha-shevi'i shabbat_ (וְיוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי שַׁבָּת) — "and the seventh day is Sabbath" This clock started in Genesis 1 and never stopped. Evening and morning, day 1 to day 7, then day 1 again. When God gave manna in Exodus 16, He gave it six days, and none on the seventh, for forty years straight. No new moon ever interrupted it. The week just kept rolling. Think of it like this: September 1st does not have to fall on Sunday. If you forced September 1st to always be Sunday, you would have to break the seven day week and make an eight or nine day week at the end of August. That is never commanded. The Sabbath is every seventh day, uninterrupted. *Clock 2: The Month - _chodesh_ (חֹדֶשׁ) and _mo'ed_ (מוֹעֵד)* The second clock is the month. _chodesh_ comes from _chadash_ (חָדָשׁ) — to renew. No renewing of the moon, no new month. That is true. You cannot have a new month without a new moon. _rosh chodesh_ (רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ) — head of the month — is when the renewed moon is sighted. This clock controls the feasts. The feasts are called _mo'adim_ (מוֹעֲדִים) — appointed times. Passover, Shavuot, Trumpets, Tabernacles — all of them need the moon to know when they are. Leviticus 23 shows the difference clearly: Verse 3 gives Clock 1: The weekly Sabbath. Verse 4 starts Clock 2: "These are the _mo'adim_ (מוֹעֲדִים) of the Lord..." So, does the moon reset the month? Yes. Does the moon reset the feasts? Yes. Does the moon reset the Sabbath? No. The moon tells you when it is _chodesh_ (חֹדֶשׁ). It does not tell you when it is _shabbat_ (שַׁבָּת). If you make it do that, you break the seven day week that God has kept running since Creation. Two clocks. One for weeks, one for months.
