Are the goats required to be pure?* Yes. *Leviticus 22:19-22* - every offering must be *תמים - tamim*, without blemish. - *Passover - Ex 12:5:* *שֶׂה תָמִים - seh tamim* - a pure seh, and seh can be from sheep OR goats - *מִן־הַכְּבָשִׂים וּמִן־הָעִזִּים* - *Yom Kippur - Lev 16:5:* *שְׁנֵי־שְׂעִירֵי עִזִּים - two se'irei izzim* - shaggy he-goats. Must be identical per Yoma 6:1 - same color, size, value, bought together. Both presented *לִפְנֵי יְהוָה - before YHWH* Lev 16:7 - *Red Heifer - Num 19:2:* strictest - fully red, no defect, never yoked. Same purity principle, different fences. *2. Is one of those goat words used for demons?* Yes. *שָׂעִיר - sa'ir* = hairy one. *Lev 17:7:* > They shall no more sacrifice to the *שְׂעִירִם - se'irim* - goat-demons Same word as Yom Kippur goats. Isaiah 13:21, 34:14 - *sa'ir* dwelling in ruins. *3. So is Azazel a demon? That would be forbidden.* This is the problem people fall into. If *עֲזָאזֵל - Azazel* is a demon who carries our sins, then presenting a goat before YHWH as a possible offering to a demon would be *טָמֵא* and forbidden by Lev 17:7. Torah avoids that precisely: > *Lev 16:10 - וְהַשָּׂעִיר... יָעֳמַד־חַי לִפְנֵי יְהוָה לְכַפֵּר עָלָיו לְשַׁלַּח אֹתוֹ לַעֲזָאזֵל* > "shall be stood alive BEFORE YHWH to make atonement UPON him, to SEND him to Azazel to the wilderness" - Both goats are presented *before YHWH*, not before Azazel. - The second goat is *NOT slaughtered*. No blood on altar. Therefore it is not *זֹבֵחַ לַשְּׂעִירִם* - sacrificing TO demons. It is *שִׁלַּח - sent* alive. - *Azazel* itself is not "demon" in Torah. Root is *אזל - azal - to go away, to be removed*. KJV "scapegoat" = goat of complete removal. *4. Yeshua fulfills BOTH goats - as Peshitta says, not as Greek translates it.* This is where Peshitta corrects Greek theology. Greek 1 Pet 3:18 says *ζῳοποιηθεὶς - made alive / quickened* in spirit - as if He was dead in spirit and had to be made alive. Peshitta does NOT say that. He IS Life. *Peshitta - 1 Peter 3:18 - Murdock/Etheridge:* > *Because the Meshiha also once died on account of sins, the just on account of sinners, that he might bring us unto Aloha. And dead in the body and alive in the Spirit* > James Murdock: *For the Messiah also once died for our sins, the righteous for sinners... And he died in body, but lived in spirit.* d6d8 Not "was made alive." *He died in body, but lived in spirit.* He was alive in Spirit even while dead in body. That's exactly the two goats: - *Goat 1 - ליהוה - for YHWH:* His body dies - *Isa 53:10 - נַפְשׁוֹ אָשָׁם - His nephesh an offering for sin* - blood enters Holy of Holies Heb 9:12. - *Goat 2 - לעזאזל - for removal:* Alive in Spirit, He descends *Eph 4:9 - He descended to the lower parts of the earth* and carries sin away outside the camp, to the wilderness/sheol - *1 Pet 3:19 - in that Spirit He went and preached to the spirits in prison* - the place of *se'irim*. He didn't sacrifice TO a demon. He entered the demon's domain as the living One and removed sin from before YHWH. *One offering, two actions - death and living removal. Lev 16:5 says the two goats are ONE sin offering.* Both needed.
