*Isa 28:15 — The Overflowing That Rows Across* Complete translation, as I now see it: *ki amartem karatnu brit et-mavet ve-im Sheol asinu chozeh shot shoteph ki ya'avor lo yevo'enu ki samnu chazav machsenu uva-sheker nistarenu [כִּי אֲמַרְתֶּם כָּרַתְנוּ בְרִית אֶת־מָוֶת וְעִם־שְׁאוֹל עָשִׂינוּ חֹזֶה שׁוֹט שׁוֹטֵף כִּי־יַעֲבֹר לֹא יְבוֹאֵנוּ כִּי שַׂמְנוּ כָזָב מַחְסֵנוּ וּבַשֶּׁקֶר נִסְתָּרְנוּ]* "For you have said, We have cut a covenant with Death, and with Sheol we have made a pact — *shot shoteph ki ya'avor [שׁוֹט שׁוֹטֵף כִּי־יַעֲבֹר]* — the overflowing that rows across when it passes over — shall not come to us, for we have made lies our refuge and in falsehood we have hidden ourselves." Not "overflowing scourge." A whip does not overflow. A river does. *shot [שׁוֹט]* — Strongs 7751 *shut [שׁוּט]* — to row, to rove, to go about — the oar — *shayit [שַׁיִט]* — *meshot [מְשׁוֹט]* — oar *shoteph [שׁוֹטֵף]* — Strongs 7857 *shataph [שָׁטַף]* — to overflow, to flood, to rinse away — participle — overflowing *shot shoteph [שׁוֹט שׁוֹטֵף]* — the roving flood — the ferrying overflow — that which rows you across against your will into exile. *LXX vs Targum — both heard water:* *LXX:* *ean epelthe kataigis pheromene [ἐὰν ἐπέλθῃ καταιγὶς φερομένη]* — "if a rushing storm should come upon" LXX lost *shot [שׁוֹט]* as whip entirely. They read only *shataph [שׁטף]*. For them it is just weather, just flood. No oar, no chastisement. That fits rulers — "it's just politics, just a storm, it will pass." *Targum Jonathan:* *machah de-madbarana [מְחָאָה דְּמַדְבְּרָנָא]* — "a blow that carries into wandering / wilderness" Targum kept movement. Not whip — *machah [מְחָאָה]* — blow that exiles. He heard *shut [שׁוּט]* — to rove, to wander. Targum understands: this is not beaten, this is _floated away_. Exile as forced rowing. Both LXX and Targum agree: water, not whip. LXX says storm passes over. Targum says you are carried away in it. *Peshitta — the misreading:* Peshitta follows the Qere *shot [שׁוֹט]* as 7752 *shot [שׁוֹט]* — whip, scourge — national chastisement. *shot'a [ܫܘܛܐ]* — whip It keeps *shoteph [שׁוֹטֵף]* as flood, so it renders "overflowing scourge." But as I said, scourge does not overflow. This is conflation of two roots because later scribes thought only of punishment, not transport. They turned the river into a whip. But Isaiah in *Isa 8:7-8* already defined Assyria as *mei ha-nahar ha-atzumim ve-ha-rabbim ve-shataf [מֵי הַנָּהָר הָעֲצוּמִים וְהָרַבִּים וְשָׁטַף]* — the mighty many waters overflowing. The overflowing does not whip you — it rows you across. Boat loses control. Direction forced. Into exile. The rulers said it would not come to them. But the river rows all who make lies their refuge.
