Isa 28:6-9

Here is blog 6-9 in same voice — LXX vs MT / P difference is sharpest here — vomit vs covetousness: --- *Isa 28:6-9 — Judgment, Hirelings, and Tables — Vomit vs Covetous Counsel* We saw 1-4 — man's heavenly fatness — beautifully fertile hill they called heaven — early fig eaten while in hand — cannot produce — vs ground prepared by _shavah_ — pressing even — Divider who gives rest. Now 6-9 — priest and prophet — same hirelings — LXX keeps thread — MT / P keep vomit. *My translation 6-9 with glosses:* *6* And for spirit of judgment to him that sits in judgment, and for strength to those who turn back battle to gate (LXX: They shall be left in spirit of judgment for judgment, and for strength of them that hinder slaying) (P: same as MT). *7* But these also through wine have erred, and through strong drink are gone astray — priest and prophet have erred through strong drink, swallowed up from wine, gone astray from strong drink — they err in vision, they stumble in judgment (LXX: For these have trespassed through wine, they have erred through strong drink, priest and prophet are mad through strong drink, swallowed up by reason of wine, staggered through drunkenness, they have erred — this is vision) (P: same plus — they eat immoderately — AEIB). *8* For all tables full of vomit, filthiness — no place clean (LXX: Curse shall devour this counsel, for this is counsel for sake of covetousness) (P: same as MT — vomit and filthiness). *9* Whom shall he teach knowledge? And whom shall he make to understand message? Weaned from milk, drawn from breasts (LXX: To whom have we reported evils? And to whom have we reported message? — weaned from milk, drawn from breast) (P: same as MT). *Breakdown:* *V6 — judgment left vs given* MT / P: _u'le ruach mishpat_ — and for spirit of judgment to sitter in judgment — future hope — remnant judges get justice. LXX: _They shall be left in spirit of judgment_ — not given — left — remainder after beating of hirelings in v3. Remnant left in judgment — same as _nishar_ — residue of people in v5. LXX sees remnant left after trample. Same thought, different angle — MT: He will be spirit of justice — LXX: They shall be left in it. *V7 — priest and prophet — hirelings still* Both agree — priest and prophet err through wine and strong drink — _shagu, ta'u_ — wander, stagger. AEIB Peshitta adds gloss you caught before — _they eat immoderately_ — not just drink — same as early fig — eat while in hand — fertile ground that cannot produce enough, eat as it produces. Man's heavenly fatness makes them eat immoderately — no _shavah_. LXX adds — _this is vision_ — _haute he horasis_ — their erring IS vision — false vision from drunkenness — vs true vision from rest. This is hireling thread from v1 — LXX hirelings of Ephraim drunk without wine — now priests are mad through strong drink — same hirelings — Micah 3:11. *V8 — the big split — vomit vs covetous counsel — LXX differs from MT and P here* This is where you said LXX goes against all others. MT: _ki kol shulchanot mal'u ki tzo'ah beli maqom_ — for all tables full of vomit, filthiness, no place clean — physical vomit from wine — tables of priests in temple? Their feasts. P: same — Lamsa — all tables full of vomit and filthiness — Peshitta agrees MT — vomit. LXX: _ara ara kataphagetai tauten ten boulen, haute gar estin boule heneken pleonexias_ — *Curse shall devour this counsel, for this is counsel for sake of covetousness.* No vomit — no tables — curse devours counsel — counsel for covetousness. Why? LXX is interpreting vomit as *covetous counsel* — because hirelings drunk without wine — not drunk on wine — drunk on _pleonexia_ — covetousness — greed for gain. Vomit — _qi tzo'ah_ — what comes up — what is poured out — tables full of what they regurgitate — false teaching — LXX reads it as *counsel* — _boule_ — their teaching — for sake of gain — hired prophets selling counsel for money. So: - MT / P: literal — tables covered with vomit from wine — priest's feasts — unclean place. - LXX: spiritual — tables become counsel tables — counsel for covetousness — hireling prophets giving counsel for pay — curse devours it. Both true — physical vomit shows spiritual covetousness — beautiful fertile tables that cannot produce enough — eat immoderately — vomit. Man's heavenly fatness produces vomit tables — cannot keep — eats and vomits. YHWH's heavenly with instructions from above — _shavah_ pressed even — Divider who gives rest — _marge'ah_ in 28:12 — tables clean, with _menuha_ — rest to weary — This is rest, this is repose — _zot ha-menuha, zot ha-marge'ah_ — not vomit, but rest. *V9 — whom teach?* MT: mocking question — _et mi yoreh de'ah, et mi yavin shemu'ah_ — whom shall He teach knowledge? Weaned from milk, drawn from breasts? — scoffers say — are we infants? — they mock line upon line. LXX: _To whom have we reported evils? And to whom have we reported message?_ — same but adds evils — _kaka_ — evil report — they reported evil counsel — covetous counsel — and now ask who will hear? P: same as MT. Scoffers — priest and prophet drunk on wine / covetousness — say — who is He trying to teach? Babies? Answer in v11-12 — with stammering lip and foreign tongue will He speak — and give *Divider who gives rest* — _marge'ah_ — not vomit — rest. So 6-9 LXX vs MT/P: - MT/P: spirit of judgment, priest err through wine, tables vomit, whom teach infants? - LXX: left in judgment, priest mad, this vision, curse devours counsel for covetousness, to whom report evils? LXX keeps hireling logic — hirelings drunk without wine — because drunk on covetousness — counsel for gain — curse devours it — so vomit becomes covetous counsel. Next blog 10-13 — _tsav la tsav_ — we will need LXX _thlipsin epi thlipsin_ — affliction on affliction — expectation on expectation — you already have.
